CROATIA

Croatia has thrived on the Balkan Peninsula since Roman times. Its popularity is partly down to the climate, where you can expect 12 to 13 hours of sunshine daily during the summer.

There are sandy coves and bays to explore on the mainland and many more among the 130 Kornati Islands, islets, and reefs, which fleck the Adriatic Sea. Two of the best include the island of Krk, with attractive fishing villages and walled monasteries and the island of Hvr which attracts more of a lively crowd into its sheltered harbour. There ancient, cobbled lanes have cocktail bars, and superb seafood restaurants.

Further south on the Dalmatian coast the larger city of Split will have Games of Thrones fans eager to see the film location of Diocletian’s Palace. The city has an attractive historic centre, where you can find some of the most delicious dining in the country.

MONTENEGRO

With rugged mountains and medieval villages where time stood still, Montenegro is a Balkan delight, ripe for discovery. On a Montenegro sailing trip, cruise to the Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like area with historic churches and waterfront restaurants. Step ashore to explore the UNESCO Old Town, with narrow lanes and red roof houses, set beneath a backdrop of emerald mountains. Close by, the Monaco of Montenegro awaits – the jet-set town of Tivat with long promenades, fine dining, and an array of superyachts moored in the marina. Stay a while and soak up the atmosphere whilst dining on fresh lobster at sunset. Continue the adventure at Herceg Novi, a delightful medieval town of 100,001 steps and narrow lanes lined with fragrant mimosa flowers. For the most incredible views of Montenegro’s coastline climb the stairs to Kanli Kula Fortress and don’t forget your camera!
